Web vs Internet
Two things that we use everyday; the Internet and the Web. However, how many of us know the difference between these two functions, or even know there was a difference at all? The Internet and the Web are commonly mistaken to be one in the same, but they are two separate entities that often work simultaneously together to connect people from all over the world and allow us to access an endless amount of information.
The Internet is in theory a “network of networks” (Toothman 1). It is likely that your phone, computer, house and school are on a network, that together form a larger network. These area networks are connected to other networks nearby to create regional networks. These are connected to other regional networks, and so on and so forth. The networks here on Earth are connected to satellites in space and are also a part of the Internet. The Internet was founded by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf in 1990 (Web 1).
The Web is what we use to access the Internet. It is not a network of the Internet. There are other systems used to access the Internet but the Web is the most commonly used. The Web uses a “hypertext” to access all forms of information on all the different networks. This allows people to share information worldwide. To access the Web we use browsers such as Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. The Web was founded by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau in October of 1994.
The first website was created in 1991 on August 6th, created by Tim Berners-Lee. It was made for the computer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the URL is http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.
